FEMA COVID-19

Funeral and Burial Reimbursement Program
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought overwhelming grief to many families. At FEMA, our mission is to help people before, during and after disasters. We are dedicated to helping ease some of the financial stress and burden caused by the virus. Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, FEMA is providing financial assistance for COVID-19 related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020.

We created a Sadaqa Janazah (Burial Fund) to provide financial assistance to our brothers and sisters for Islamic burials. As a Muslim and human being it is important to receive a proper burial. Please help your Muslim brothers and sisters from improper burial and need your help saving as many as we can for proper islamic burial. Countless poor families and new Muslims in our community benefit from this fund. Your generous donation will remove the financial burden of a Muslim family in the most difficult time of their lives.

Planning an Islamic funeral

Islamic law (“sharia”) dictates that funeral arrangements must start immediately after the death of a loved one. This means there is no viewing or visitation and mourners must attend their mosque’s prayer room to offer religious prayers for the deceased.

The family members in charge of the funeral will typically contact their local Islamic organisation for assistance; together they will look for a suitable funeral home or funeral director with experience arranging a Muslim funeral.

Muslim beliefs about death

The Islamic faith has a strong belief in the afterlife. Muslims follow the principle that the way a person acts throughout their life will determine what happens to them after they die. If they perform good deeds and follow Islamic religious codes, they will be rewarded with entry to Paradise on the Day of Judgement. On this day, Muslims believe the world will end and the dead will experience eternal peace (Paradise) or eternal suffering (Hell).

Traditional Service

There are several distinct parts, some of which are optional. The first part is called a visitation. A visitation is typically held the afternoon or evening before the funeral service. The visitation typically lasts about three hours, with people coming at the time best for them.

The second part is the funeral service itself. At a funeral service, the body is present in either a closed or open casket. Funerals can be held at a place of worship or another facility.

Graveside Service

Following the funeral is the graveside service. Often there will be a funeral procession from the place of the funeral to the cemetery. The family can choose to use limousines, a flower car, escorts and the funeral coach (hearse). Attendees will follow behind the funeral coach on the way to the cemetery. A simpler version of this is to simply set a time to meet at the cemetery for the interment.
